THREE winning teams from the Basingstoke Primary Schools Tournament have gone on to become county champions.

Teams from Great Binfields Primary, Hatch Warren Junior, St Bede's Primary and North Waltham Primary schools, which triumphed at the local tournament - sponsored by The Gazette and Totally Tennis - travelled to the David Lloyd centre in Southampton to compete in the British Schools Tennis Association (BSTA) county finals.

Players were representing Basingstoke as well as their own schools in an event which attracted teams from all over Hampshire.

The teams were divided into the three mini-tennis colour zones - red, orange and green.

Competing in the red level mini-tennis event, the team from Great Binfields won all their matches to take the title of county champions.

At the orange level, Basingstoke provided both the winners and runners-up spots, with St Bede's just in front of Hatch Warren.

At the green level, North Waltham were also successful and claimed the county title.

Totally Tennis schools co-ordinator Jo Brett, who organised the primary schools tournament and the county teams, said: "It is a fantastic achievement for each individual player, their school and Basingstoke to be involved with this event and even more fantastic that we won everything.

"I would like to thank tennis development officer Alison Beard for transporting the teams to Southampton and to all the teachers and parents involved for their continued support of tennis development in schools."

The annual Basingstoke Primary Schools Tournament is held every year during the summer term as part of the extensive Totally Tennis schools programme.

Players have the opportunity to play in a competitive environment and represent their school while practising the skills they have learned with the coaches in their tennis sessions at school.
