THE Isle of Wight will reach a major communication milestone today.
Telecommunications giant British Telecom will update the final exchange on the Island at Wootton Bridge with broadband capacity, linking more than 2,000 homes and businesses to the Internet and e-mail.
Patricia Vaz, south-east regional director for BT, said: "The upgrading of Wootton Bridge will mean that we have delivered on our promise to make broadband almost universally available through the Isle of Wight.
"The next step is to ensure that the technology is adopted as widely as possible so that the community can reap maximum benefit."
By the end of last week, 19.2 per cent of the Isle of Wight's homes and businesses which have access to broadband services were using them - compared with a national average of 21.4 per cent of homes and businesses.
