BEWARE: Isn't it always just as you are preparing the dinner that someone will knock at the door!

In my case, recently, it was two men.

"We are here to offer a free service," said one.

"You weren't in when everyone else in Queens Road received the benefit," he continued.

Naturally, I was concerned and said that if he wanted me to change my utilities supplier, I wasn't interested.

He insisted that this was not the case.

"We're not changing your supplies, but checking that you are not still being charged a service charge.

"If I could check the number on a recent bill I will easily be able to tell."

I caught sight of printed matter on his clipboard and saw the company logo. I assured him that I had no intention of switching and that he may not be changing my supplier but I was certain that he would be changing the company who charged me for the service.

He had to concede and I closed the door.

My concern is that this type of doorstep salesman is all too frequently calling in this area.

Many elderly people might be duped into letting them see a recent bill, which may result in them having their accounts switched to a different billing company, whether they agree to it or not.

Please contact me, if this has happened to you. Perhaps we can get something done about it.
