IT'S certainly an egg race with a difference. There's no spoon in sight in a test to see how long an egg will stay in the air.

Six schools took part in this year's Great Egg Race Challenge organised by Southampton Institute and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

The group of 34 Year 9 and 10 pupils had to design and make a cardboard aeroplane that was strong enough to carry an egg for as long as possible.

Each team's aircraft was launched from a platform two metres off the ground as teams went head-to-head to compete for the £500 first prize.

The competition is aimed at allowing children to get hands on experience of engineering, design and technology.

Rebecca Carr, business development officer at Southampton Institute, said: "The competition went really well with 34 youngsters taking part. They enjoyed the challenge of making a plane strong enough to take an egg."

The winning school was Blandford School in Dorset. Hardley School in Holbury came second while Sholing Technology College, in Southampton, came third.
