Longer opening times and public entertainment has been granted to a Winchester inn under the new Licensing Act, despite concerns from residents.
The Jolly Farmer, a Greene King pub in Andover Road, will be able to open from 10am-11.40pm from Sunday-Thursday and from 10am-12.40am on Fridays and Saturdays, extendable by an hour on Bank Holidays.
Additional conditions laid down by the three councillors on the licensing sub-committee included that the pub must be a member of Pub Watch, the premises may only be used for the sale of alcohol in outside areas from noon-11pm, and karaoke should only be held once a week.
Licensing officers received 19 letters of objection from residents living in Brassey Road, behind the pub, to the variation of the Jolly Farmer's licence
They argued that the surrounding area was quiet and residential and an extension of opening times and public entertainment would be intrusive.
They also argued that the longer hours could entice revellers from the city centre after the pubs there closed, contributing to noise levels, vandalism and binge drinking.
However, bar manager, Pat Britton, said at Wednesday's meeting that no-one had ever complained to her about the running of the pub and that she would continue to ensure it stayed that way.
She agreed to put flyers in the pub letting customers know in advance of any events that would be forthcoming. Mrs Britton also consented to all the conditions.
