REMEMBRANCE: Sunday was marked in the village with a huge turnout at the War Memorial.

The Rev Politt conducted the service and those lost in wars and conflict were remembered.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the British Legion and the parish council. First Sherfield Brownies also laid a wreath.

The Last Post was played, and Geoff Belsham, from Breach Lane Chapel, read from Romans, chapter 13.

NWR meeting: Wartime memories of five Sherfield residents were recollected at the NWR meeting in the garden room.

Telling their stories were Harry Moore - a young lad in 1939 - who told of bombings and the Home Guard and, towards the end of the war, his Army experiences in Burma, Aubrey Brydges, who was a bomber pilot, Clem Keeble, a parachutist who was very active on D-Day and Judith Angell, who survived Auschwitz.

Completing the evening, Percy Sims told of his war days in a protected occupation, building tanks in Bournemouth.
