CIVIC leaders in Southampton are due to send a blunt message to bosses at the city's airport today - "don't go ahead with controversial expansion plans".
In a hard-hitting report, due to be rubber stamped by members of the council's ruling Liberal Democrat Cabinet, council leaders say the proposed growth in the airport brings "unacceptable adverse environmental impacts" and would not serve the business interests of the region.
They call for "more prudent growth" and steps to mitigate noise, emissions, traffic movements and safety risks.
Eastleigh councillors say they would like to see passenger targets limited to three million.
However, Southampton and Fareham Chamber of Commerce and their counterparts in Portsmouth and south-east say the development plans would bring increased job opportunities and have a positive impact on the regional business community, its export markets and tourism.
