The Milford Shingle Bank was really on song when Lymington Sea Angling Club staged their annual Open there.

More than 50 of the 80 competitors returned 444 fish to the scales with Nick Jackson from Winchester carrying off the £150 top prize with a mixed haul of 19 fish weighing 16lb 1oz.

The heaviest fish recorded was a 6lb 13.75oz bass bagged by Adrian Smith from Pennington.

The runner-up in the main event was Malcolm Stote from Lymington with 18 fish weighing exactly 15lb followed by Adrian Smith 14lb 14oz, Paul Dibden 13lb 10oz, Ian Golds 13lb 8oz, Paul Phillips 11lb 2oz, M Osmond 9lb 12.25oz, Jeffery Fisk 9lb 2oz, Alan Mapes 8lb 14.5oz and Mark Plowman with 7lb 14.5oz.

The pairs section was won by Nick Jackson and M Osmond with a combined total of 26lb 6.75oz.

Eight-year-old Brad Smith from Pennington won the junior match with 13 fish weighing 8lb 14.25oz to nudge out Oliver Hopkins 7lb 1oz and Daniel Stote with 3lb 10.75oz

l Competitors sampled some excellent sport during the Weymouth Echo Open shore competition staged along the Ferrybridge section of Chesil Beach.

The £200 top prize was collected by Welsh International Joe Arch with a mixed catch weighing 24lb 12oz.

The day's heaviest fish was a 20lb 12oz conger beached by Nigel Hawkins from Lulworth, nearly all of the 52 strong field returned fish to the scales.

l On the freelance front some nice cod have been taken by boat anglers targeting marks within the confines of the Solent.

Steve Pollard from Hythe sampled some typical action when he used a large strip of cuttlefish to tempt a double figure fish, it was the first cod that Pollard has taken this season.

Jason Reynolds also got among the fish when he went afloat in his own small boat "Whitecrest", taking cod of 8lb and 11lb 14oz. The 38-year-old supervisor from Totton used squid presented on a 4/0 pennel rig to tempt the fish after launching his small craft from Calshot.

l Over 80 competitors lined Southsea Beach for the Drayton Pegged Open Shore Competition where they found some fair sport with Colin Carey taking the podium with a 7lb 5.5oz catch, mainly comprising of pouting.

l The Wessex Division of the National Federation of Sea Anglers are requesting the help of clubs and individuals for a litter sweep along the deep water section at Magazine Lane, Marchwood.

It will take place just before the start of a personal members shore competition.

Anyone who can lend a hand should turn up about 9.30am on December 4.
