ELEVEN Hampshire schools and two colleges have today been declared top of the class by school inspectors.

They are among 457 nationwide named in the annual list of outstanding schools and colleges published by the Office for Standards in education (Ofsted).

All have been included because of their high educational standards, excellent pupil achievement and strong leadership.

In Southampton, Kanes Hill Primary, Townhill Infant and Bitterne C of E Junior were singled out for praise.

Head teacher Sallyanne Stanton, who has overseen major improvements in test results at Kanes Hill Primary, was pleased by the school's inclusion.

She said: "Although many of our children start school with low levels of attainment, very good teaching and a stimulating curriculum help to promote high levels of achievement as they progress through the school."

Durley C of E Primary, with 115 pupils on roll, was also included on the list, much to the delight of head teacher Kirstie Baines, who put the school's success down to teamwork.

She said: "It's not just about one person. Everyone gives 100 per cent."

After 23 years at the helm, John Perkins has seen Blackfield Junior, in the New Forest, go from strength to strength.

He said: "We have wonderful staff who are thoroughly supported by parents and governors."

Other Hampshire schools and colleges in this year's roll of honour include Cheriton Primary School, Alresford; Marchwood C of E Infant School, March-wood; St Michael and All Angels C of E Infant School, Lyndhurst; Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School, Lymington; Swan-more College of Technology and The Westgate School, Winchester.

Taunton's College in Southampton and Peter Symonds College in Winchester were also included for their high educational standards.

In tomorrow's Daily Echo, Kanes Hill Primary, Blackfield Juniors, Durley Primary and St Michael and All Angels celebrate their Ofsted success stories.
