Robbie Matthews took his chance to show what he could do, scoring two goals for Salisbury City as their weakened side were still too good for struggling Aylesbury.

Nick Holmes' men were without Paul Sales and Matt Tubbs - their top two scorers this season - and the suspended Alex Haddow.

It was Sales' first absence from the starting line-up since the start of the campaign but Matthews more than made up for that in the first minute when he aimed a powerful header goalwards only to see keeper Styles make a tremendous save.

Matthews only had to wait a further 18 minutes before opening the scoring for the Whites who, with the 3-0 victory, maintained their place at the top of the Southern League.

A free-kick was awarded just outside the Aylesbury penalty area and one-time Saints trialist Matthews demanded the ball before firing an unstoppable rising drive in off the underside of the bar past the helpless Styles.

Salisbury continued to totally dominate and, on 32 minutes, Jon Beswetherick burst through on the left but his effort cannoned back off of the post.

Just before the interval Wayne Turk and Tim Bond were both unlucky not to score.

And it was not until the 49th minute when Salisbury goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer saw his first action, calmly touching over a lob from Matt Hayward.

Four minutes later the former Eastleigh striker had a good chance to get his hat-trick but lobbed wide in a one on one with Styles and then, on 70 minutes, he had an even better chance but put his close-range effort over the top.

The Ducks' goal had led a charmed life but Matthews was instrumental in Salisbury's third goal on 81 minutes.

Substitute Andy Cook sprinted down the left from just inside the Aylesbury half and delivered a pinpoint cross from the byline to Matthews.

His header eventually came to Adam Heath, who made no mistake from close in.
