Shaun Udal has pleaded with the England selectors not to end his Test career after one series.

The England squad for the three Test tour of India is announced tomorrow morning and after taking just three wickets at 92.33 in his first three Tests in Pakistan, Udal's place is under threat from Northants' slow left-armer Monty Panesar.

But the Hampshire off spinner, left, believes he will be a different proposition in India than on the flat wickets in Pakistan.

Udal, 36, said: "I don't think I let anyone down in Pakistan, where it was obviously very difficult to bowl sides out for a finger spinner. I wasn't the only one that struggled.

"Their guy didn't get many wickets and Ashley Giles found it difficult as well so I certainly hope I get another chance.

"If the wickets in Pakistan turned square and I wasn't successful I could hold my hands up.

"But I'm the man in possession and over the last few years the England selectors have given anyone who has been selected a fair crack of the whip.

"If it turns square out in India and I don't take wickets fair enough, but I'm confident in my ability and am pretty hopeful I'll be going.

"I would rate my chances at 70-30."

Udal had the season of his life for Hampshire in 2005, taking 44 wickets at 18.90 and captaining Hampshire to the C & G Trophy before winning a place in the England squad at the end of September.

He added: "No-one has done anything since then to put themselves ahead of me and I was kept on for the one dayers, which was a good sign.

"It will turn a lot more in India than it did in Pakistan and India have got left arm seamers who will create some rough for me, as well as several left handed batsmen who I can turn the ball away from.

"That's in my favour and so is the fact that Harbhajan Singh is very effective as an off spinner in India."

Few Hampshire fans will forget Udal's performance against India at the Rose Bowl in 2002.

The match was overshadowed by controversy over the Rose Bowl wicket, but Udal took 5-59, a haul that included the prize scalps of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

"That will give me confidence as well. At this stage in my career I'm desperate to stay involved because I know my international career will be over if I don't go on this tour," he said.

"But if I'm not picked I suppose life goes on."

The ECB will announce the squad at 11.30am tomorrow.
