VOLUNTEERS are needed to sign up for a new service to help carers looking after patients in their own homes.

Lymington-based Oakhaven Hospice is starting a "Volunteer Sitting Service" to give carers some precious respite time.

Helpers will not be expected to offer medical or personal care, but will instead provide companionship through reading, preparing drinks, making conversation or just by being there.

Hospice bosses believe just a few hours of respite a week can make a real difference to both the carer and the patient.

Much of the funding for the new £6,750 project has come from donations from local people, who have responded generously to the recent Oakhaven "Who Cares?" appeal.

By giving up a maximum of four hours a week, volunteers can help the hospice to make the project a reality.

As well as covering travel expenses, Oakhaven also provides ongoing support for volunteers, as well as comprehensive initial training.
