YOUNG footballers from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have taken part in a tournament where the winners will play in Munich stadium during the middle of the World Cup.

The south-east regional trials were hosted by children's TV channel Jetix, which is looking for youngsters to take part in its international

five-a-side football tournament to be staged in the Olympic Stadium this summer.

More than 20 school teams from the region, some of which are pictured above, showed off their football skills at Soccer City on Fareham Industrial Estate in the hopes of winning a place in the national final.

The winners will go to Germany and play against the best young teams from countries such as America, Brazil and Japan.

The hunt for teams is being carried out in partnership with the English Schools Football Association.

Karen Lewis, from Jetix, said the event saw Portchester Community School, Hamble Community Sports College and Ventnor Middle School pitting their skills against others from the region.

She said: "It was a busy day full of fun for the 150 boys who played. There were a number of mums and dads there too lending their support. In the end it was John Hampton Grammar School in High Wycombe which won.

"They will go through to the next round."

The girls' event is due to be held next Tuesday.
