MORE than 100 youngsters from across Southampton were honoured at a glittering Duke of Edinburgh's Awards ceremony at the Harbour Lights cinema.

BBC South Today presenter Sally Taylor, Southampton mayor Councillor Edwina Cooke, and Shirley Price, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award director for the south-east region, were among those at the event, where 144 young people aged between 14 and 25 were presented with gold, silver or bronze awards.

This year, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme celebrates its 50th anniversary. To mark the event, a new "open" award centre is being launched in Millbrook.

The centre - which will be the second to be opened in the city - will allow youngsters to take part in the scheme who are not able to do so via their school, college, university or other youth organisation.

As part of the scheme's anniversary celebrations, young people aged between 11 and 25 are being asked to take part in a photographic competition.

Application forms for the competition will be available in schools, youth projects and libraries in the city from April 3.
