ANDOVER police have been out on the town centre's streets to catch young truants.

In their latest blitz on kids dodging school, the officers were joined by staff from Hampshire County Council's education department.

A police spokesman said that during the morning-long session officers stopped 28 children to ask them why they were not at school.

But while the total was more than a similar patrol last year, there were only three children who actually had to be returned to school. All the rest had justified reasons for being out.

The spokesman said: "This is good news because it means that most children were in school where they should be, and most of those that weren't had justified reasons for not being."
