LOCAL radio enthusiasts in Tidworth are celebrating after air-waves regulator Ofcom announced that two local stations are each to get a slot on the FM band.
Garrison Radio, which has been broadcasting mainly to a military audience on 1287 medium wave, will now have an FM frequency and come under the auspices of Salisbury Plain Radio.
"It is something that we have been trying to do for some time," said garrison adjutant Major Phil Gill.
Meanwhile, Castledown Radio, which is a community radio station launched by Tidworth Development Trust, has been broadcasting on the internet since March 2005.
Baz Reilly, who used to work for Garrison Radio, has made a considerable personal effort to make Castledown Radio a reality.
"I am absolutely thrilled," he said.
"We have been waiting a long time for this decision and now we have the go- ahead to bring radio directly to the people."
Castledown, which is based on the campus at Castledown School, will broadcast to Tidworth and surrounding villages and continue to rely on willing volunteers to man the station.
