A COOL-HEADED pair of paramedics who delivered a breech birth baby in their ambulance have received the warmest of thanks from the newborn's Andover parents.

Tiny Calum Aylett was born two months early in the back of an ambulance while his mum Nina Thomson was being rushed to Winchester's Royal Hampshire County Hospital from her Coach-ways home after starting contractions.

The 4lbs 1oz baby - who emerged feet first in the hospital car park - was whisked into the hospital where he received specialist treatment in the nick of time.

And now that Calum is safely home, Nina and his dad Pete Aylett have extended a personal thank you and a christening invitation to Hampshire Ambulance's Michael Burrows and Matt Western.

Nina, aged 31, said: "I know they were only doing their job, but thank God that they were doing their job that day."

Minutes before Nina gave birth on 2 January, the ambulance picked her up from a Bullington Cross lay-by.

Pete had dialled 999 because fiancee Nina was doubled up in pain, unable to continue the car journey to hospital.

"The thought that was going through my head was 'I'm going to lose my baby now'," Nina recalled.

Calum was the first breech baby that paramedic Michael had delivered in 10 years on the job.
