HAMPSHIRE riders recently attended a Cross Country training clinic at Hoplands Equestrian Centre,

King's Somborne with Mary King, one of Britain's most inspirational 'Three Day Event' riders. Mary is a regular member of the British Team at European, World and Olympic Championship level.

She has won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, as well as being individual winner of the British Open Championships at Gatcombe Park, Burghley and Badminton Three Day Events.

Mary emphasised that safe and effective cross country riding can be achieved with a stable and secure lower leg position adopted in this phase.

"We are all taught to keep our heel down and toe up. With this position maintained, you are certain to remain secure in the saddle." she said.

The four groups of six horse-and-rider combinations taking part throughout the day enjoyed some of the very best advice and tuition there is.

Nicki Hannah, who took part early on in the day with her horse, Jaws, said "I've had the time of my life and feel privileged to have had the chance to be taught by Mary."

"Mary was extremely helpful and patient and I would definitely come again next year," said another participant, Sara Ashcroft.

The general opinion of the participants and spectators who attended was that Mary encouraged and helped both the horse and rider overcome any issues or worries they had prior to taking part in the clinic.

With two further dates arranged this year for April 11 and June 20, more local riders are guaranteed some excellent training from this world class rider.
