Hampshire Under-18s overcame the odds to win the South west Counties Cup - the Mick Parry Memorial Trophy - with a top team performance.

Facing holders Wiltshire on their own pitch at Devizes Town FC, Hampshire's passing game was restricted by the dry, bumpy pitch as the match went to extra time.

There were few highlights in a first half dominated by two good defences but the main attacks came from Hampshire.

Leigh Rumbold set up a good chance with a cross but the Wiltshire keeper just beat Ben Ngwa to the ball.

Hampshire had the better of the second half but failed to penetrate the strong Wiltshire defence.

The visitors had a let-off close to full-time when a Wiltshire forward headed over.

Hampshire finally broke the deadlock in the sixth minute of extra time. A lob into the Wiltshire penalty box caused confusion, the keeper managed to get a hand to the ball but only diverted it onto the head of Charlton Clarke and into the net.

Nic Ciardini set up Dale Stevens early in the second half of extra time but his shot was scrambled clear. Then Wiltshire came back and Hampshire were lucky not to concede when a shot was put wide with only goalkeeper Paul Smith to beat.

In the 114th minute a fine solo effort from Ciardini clinched the cup for Hampshire.

He beat a defender after a strong run from midfield, swerved to create space and blasted an unstoppable shot into the net from close range.

At this point Billy Huntley was substituted to let Bill Puckett have a few minutes in the final and his fresh legs up front saw Hampshire through to victory.

Now Hampshire Under-18s hope to complete a league-and-cup double when they face Dorset in the South West Counties Youth Champhionship final at Shaftesbury FC on May 6.
