PUPILS have been putting pen to paper because they are fed up with vandals damaging trees in their school grounds.

Some 70 letters have been written by children in Year 4 at Poulner Junior School highlighting the problem by children and their teachers have chosen the best which they plan to send to the council to raise awareness.

Six of the trees at the edge of the grounds at the North Poulner Road school have either had their branches cut off or their trunks have been decapitated.

"The children themselves came up with the idea to write the letters because they were so upset," said school spokeswoman Averil Price.

"Some asked me how to spell 'devastated'. Our children are very environmentally aware and are worried about the lack of shade for themselves and the lack of habitat for wildlife.

"By writing these letters it makes them feel that they and their views are being taken notice of."
