HUNDREDS lined the streets to cheer the homecoming hero medics.

Servicemen and women of 33 Field Hospital, Gosport, received the Freedom of the Borough at 11am today, at the Timespace.

Gosport Mayor Diane Searle presented the honour to Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Millett.

The troops have been dealing with emergencies, treating the wounded and providing everyday medical care for colleagues, civilians and even the enemy.

Corporal Donna Gent, 25, from Southampton, said: "It means a lot to know that we have this kind of support at home.

"The people of Hampshire have been amazing, I feel like a local celebrity.

"There were lots of tears when I saw my daughter but I have six weeks leave now to spend with her."

The troops were presented with the Herrick Campaign medal in private, under blazing sun.

Among their number was Simon Harmer, 33, from Winchester, who lost both legs in a bomb explosion while serving in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan.

He had been married just three months when he suffered the devastating injuries.

The troops returned earlier this month to be reunited with loved ones after six months treating the injured in the war torn country.
