Ten station fitness course will keep Southampton feeling fit

A OUTDOOR trim trail to encourage Southampton residents to get fit has been launched at the city’s Sports Centre.

The ten station trail, which is free to use, was designed with help of a leading outdoor fitness group British Military Fitness to create a challenging course for people of all abilities.

It starts with simple warm up stations such as a balance beam and arm stretch then moves on to rotate between upper body and lower body exercise stations.

The last two stations are a test of endurance with five hurdles, ending with a sit up bench to help keep waistlines under control.

A recommended route map is provided with a diagram demonstrating how to use each station correctly.

The launch of the trim trail comes as the Daily Echo continues its Beat the Bulge to get more people exercising.

A council inquiry revealed that obesity costs Southampton £147m every year and that just over one in four adults and nearly one in ten five-year-olds are dangerously fat.

The council’s leisure boss councillor John Hannides said: “Southampton City Council continues offer free and accessible ways for residents to keep fit and stay healthy.

“We are pleased to be able to increase the diversity of the activities on offer at the Sports Centre with the Trim Trail, and hope that it is enjoyed by everyone who gets to use it.”

Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre manager Paul Fuge said: “We are delighted to unveil the Trim Trail. As with the recently developed Cyclo-Cross track, this offers a free facility at the Sports Centre for people of all ages to enjoy while keeping fit.”

British Military Fitness will be running sessions at the Outdoor Sports Centre in Thornhill Road every Monday and Wednesday from June 21.

The Southampton Sports Centre is set in 150 acres of land on border of the municipal golf course in Bassett.

.
I am so glad that the State is providing for us - how ever did we stay fit and thin in the old days?

Is it time to bring back rationing?

I always like to think positive on projects such as these, but can you really see the fatties getting off bums to do something decent for themselves? The reason they're fat is because they really have no self-respect.
Maybe it would be better if they were forced to do this!

you want less fat people, remove the lifts and escalators to the fast food joints and gyms, and all public buildings.
replace lift doors with ones that only open 36 inches, so no-one with bigger waists can get in them.
have a minimum fare on buses of £10 per bus stop if you travel less than 10 stops, fine taxis for picking up short trips of under £5
and lastly.
put a treadmill on cake shop doors, so you can only buy 50% of what calories you run off in cream cakes.
any more ideas? come on this is funny huh?

I'm sure the Disability Discrimination Act would stop your first paragraph! There are acres of free parks to use. Sadly they are rarely used. I've only ever seen the free tennis courts used occasionally and kids don't seem to play football as they used to. 20 years ago we were playing football on the old Bitterne Manor School field then going home to watch the World Cup. Not seeing that sort of thing today.

A 36 inch opening equates to approximatively a 114 inch diameter waist. And you think that's OK?

Yep, that's funny.

We'll never change the fat people, just look around the supermarkets and the baskets/trolleys, fatties have loads of dairy products and the slim people have veg and salad.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I was in Tesco recently and the most humongust woman was shopping.... guess what? Full fat milk, cheese and potatoes were in the trolley. To think they want to change and to top it off the fat woman had the cheek to stand at the door whilst the partner bought the car to the waiting point!!!

I'd have made the fattie walk home!

I think you will find that potatoes live in the same isle as all the other veg.
