Nigel Adkins could yet become the new Saints manager.
The 45-year-old Scunthorpe boss has been at the centre of a storm over his possible move to Saints but a firm decision on whether he will take over at St Mary’s is expected today.
Last night it seemed cut and dried that Adkins would take over at Saints but after the two clubs failed to agree a compensation package, and a small war of words instigated by Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton erupted, the move appeared to be off.
However, the Daily Echo understands that Saints’ offer to Adkins and his assistant Andy Crosby remains on the table.
The pair will are hugely reluctant to resign from Scunthorpe and see compensation settled by a tribunal, which could leave the Iron will a paltry sum for their departed boss, who has twice led them to League One promotion.
So they are hoping that a compensation deal between the clubs can yet be agreed.
If is cannot and Adkins decides he cannot resign then Saints will quickly turn their attentions elsewhere.
The application and interview process has already taken place and so a move for a new man could happen rapidly.
