A MAN suspected of a double sex attack on a young woman as she walked home has been arrested – thanks to Daily Echo readers.

Last month we revealed pictures and CCTV footage of the man police wanted to speak to in connection with the attack on the 20-year-old as she made her way home from work in Southampton.

He ran off when she fought with him during the first attack but chillingly he then followed her and brazenly struck again.

After the first assault he tailed her on the opposite side of the road before overtaking her and laying in wait behind an advertising board.

When she came level with him he ran across the road and indecently assaulted her a second time.

The victim had just finished work in a city centre restaurant and was making her way towards Shirley when the attacks happened about 15 minutes apart.

The first incident took place in Howard Road at about 12.40am on Saturday August 21. The second was at about 1am in Shirley High Street as people drove by in their cars.

Detectives investigating the attack released CCTV footage of the man, who was distinctively dressed in a shirt and trousers on a wet and rainy night.

They say they received a good response after urging Echo readers to help identify the man.

One of several calls they received, following a front page appeal in the Echo, has led to the arrest of a 35- year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of sexual assault.

He has been spoken to by officers from Shirley CID and released on bail while investigations continue.

Anyone with information is asked to call DC Mick Connolly on 101.
