From Dirty Dancing to Bollywood, drive in movies return to Southampton this weekend thanks to Wave FM and the Daily Echo.

A big screen TV will, once again, be erected next to WestQuay shopping centre for three nights of outdoor screenings.

Audiences will be treated to the exploits of Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman (Jennifer Grey) and dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) in Dirty Dancing (1987) on Friday night.

Next up on Saturday is’90s classic Forrest Gump, the film starring Tom Hanks about a simple man’s epic journey through life, The event ends on Sunday with Bollywood box office busting Mughal E Azam, a 1960 Indian epic film loosely based on an episode in the life of Mughal Prince Salim who went on to become Emperor Jahangir in the 1600s.

Organiser Paul Hingston from Big Bear Events said: “You can drive along in your Cadillac and watch three of the best films ever made on a large outdoor screen whilst sat in the comfort of your car.”

More than 60 cars rolled onto the derelict plot at Western Esplanade to watch Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire last October, followed by Grease and Mamma Mia!

Organisers hope even more film fans will turn out this year to catch one of the latest screenings, backed by Wave 105 and the Echo.

The event is part of Southampton Film Week, which also boasts a number of activities from premieres to film heritage showings and movie workshops. Drive-in gates open at 6.30pm and films start at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £25 per car on the gate or £15 by pre-booking with Ticket South on 023 8071 1811.
