A WOMAN suffered a puncture wound to her neck after being grabbed as she walked through a Southampton park.

The 25-year-old had to be taken to hospital following the terrifying ordeal yesterday afternoon as she made her way to the bus station from Solent University.

It happened as she walked into the park, when a man came up from behind and put his arm over her mouth.

The victim managed to kick out, causing him to let go and then run off. However she was left with a mark to her neck after her skin was pierced by a sharp implement. Detectives say the exact cause of the injury is still being determined.

Police have this morning cordoned off part of Palmerston Park where the assault happened as they search for evidence.

They are also appealing for a good Samaritan, who came to the woman's aid, to come forward as they could be a vital witness to the assault around 5pm.

The area would have been busy with people making their way home from work and students leaving university buildings.

The attacker is thought to have been wearing a grey hooded top.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the attack, which has left the victim "extremely shaken", is asked to call Shirley CID on 101.
