POLICE last night returned to the scene of a frightening attack on a young woman who was grabbed as she walked through a Southampton park.

It’s the second night that officers have had a heavy presence in Palmerston Park following the assault on the 25-year-old student around 5pm on Tuesday.

As reported by the Daily Echo, the woman had just left Southampton Solent University and entered the park when her attacker pounced from behind, covering her mouth with his hand.

She suffered a puncture wound to her neck but police are not able to say what type of implement was used to inflict the injury.

The victim managed to kick her way free and ran off towards the bus station to make her way home. She was later taken to hospital and was said to be extremely shaken by her ordeal.

Detectives have launched an investigation and have been trawling through CCTV images of the area in the hope they can identify the man responsible.

Specialist search teams have also scoured the scene, which remained under police cordon until yesterday afternoon, in the hope of recovering a possible weapon. Police are appealing for witnesses. Contact the Operation Figaro team at Shirley CID on 101.
