IT was the best kept secret in the city.

Saints legendary manager Lawrie McMenemy was shocked and surprised when he was presented with a lifetime achievement award at a celebration of the club’s 125th anniversary last night.

The surprise came at a gala dinner at Southampton’s De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel. The award was presented by Tommy Docherty, manager of the Manchester United side beaten by Saints in the 1976 FA Cup final.

Hundreds of supporters came together with some of the club's most famous players and managers to mark the special occasion.

Among those present were Kevin Keegan, Graeme Souness, James Beattie, Matt Le Tissier, Mick Channon, Dave Merrington, Franny Benali and many members of the victorious '76 team.

The evening, compered by comedian Mike Osman, also featured a guest appearance by TV presenter Chris Tarrant.

The celebrations continue today with a life-size table football extravaganza in Guildhall Square and the unveiling of a Saints sculpture on the former Tyrrell & Green site in the city centre.

This evening a tribute night featuring more than 50 of the club's heroes is being held at a sold-out Mayflower Theatre.
