Despite the tough competition, nobody melted our hearts more than penniless Tom Curran.

The out-of-work classic car restorer impressed the Love Panel with his endlessly thoughtful gestures on a budget.

From presenting partner Judi with home-grown roses to wrapping her nightdress in a hot water bottle on chilly winter nights, Tom knows how to make a girl feel special.

“He’s never been able to take me on expensive holidays or buy me flashy presents,” said part-time secretary Judi, “but he doesn’t need money to show me how much he cares.”

Tom, who is profoundly deaf, often bakes for Judi and once made her a pie with ‘I love you’ spelt out in pastry. And that’s not all. On rainy days he even dashes to her office with an umbrella to make sure she stays dry.

As the South’s Most Romantic Man, Tom will receive a night for two at Southampton’s De Vere Grand Harbour hotel, a love hamper from WestQuay packed with luxury goodies as well as a £100 WestQuay gift voucher to lavish on his Valentine.

“I’m delighted to have been chosen as the most romantic man in the south but very shocked and surprised too,” said Tom. “I just do these things to make Judi’s life more comfortable.”

Tom and Judi got together six years ago when Tom would visit his elderly mother – Judi’s neighbour. But their love story stems back to their teenage years, when Judi would admire Tom from afar at local dances.

Tom added: “Winning has given me a real confidence boost. Hopefully now I can find some employment, perhaps back in the car industry, and then I can treat Judi to a proper holiday.”

WestQuay’s Nicky Hopper said: “When we launched this competition we never expected to find so many romantics out there. We hope Tom and Judi enjoy their prize and that everyone enjoys some romance this Valentine’s.”
