SMALL businesses are at the heart of the community.

They are the lifeblood of the economy and the origins of most commercial giants.

As part of its work to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurialism the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Small business of the Year award.

Operations director Maureen Frost said: “Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is delighted to sponsor this award.

“It’s a very natural and satisfying move for us as whilst we are one of the south’s biggest independent Business membership organisations we are also a small business ourselves and know the challenges that small businesses face in trying to do the best you can on a limited budget.

“It can be easy to overlook the major contribution that small businesses make to our regional and national economy through employment, wealth creation, innovation, knowledge and skills.

“You often hear of the successes of the largest companies but small businesses are the backbone of our economy so deserve to be celebrated more than they currently are.

“People talk about confidence being everything in business. This award will be an incentive to encourage many small businesses and give them some added confidence at what remains a challenging time.

The more good news we can impart through initiatives such as these awards, the better.

“We look forward to promoting the South Coast Business Awards and encouraging as many entrepreneurs and small business owners to come forward and take part as possible.”

There will also be gongs for corporate social responsibility, customer service, use of technology, innovation, training and education and growth.

In addition there will be an award for Southampton City Champion and Business Individual or Entrepreneur of the Year.

Entries must be in by April 21.

There will be four finalists in each category with the winners being revealed on July 15 at a glitzy ceremony in Southampton.
