SCORES of pub regulars are expected to gather in Southampton today to say goodbye to a popular retired landlord.

Alan Hilleard, pictured, 68, had managed pubs in the city for more than 30 years – firstly the Bevois Castle in Onslow Road and then The Guide Dog in Earls Road.

He died earlier this month after a long battle with emphysema.

The grandfather had raised thousands of pounds for cancer charities after he lost his five-yearold son James to the disease in 1997.

Widow Leah, 66, said: “Everybody knew him and over the years we raised thousands for the Wessex Cancer Trust. I think that’s what Alan will be remembered for.”

His funeral will be held this afternoon at the east chapel of Southampton Crematorium at 1.15pm.

The family is asking that donations be made to Wessex Cancer Trust, rather than sending flowers.

n Up to 500 motorbikes roared through Southampton yesterday as part of a funeral procession.

Police escorted the bikers as they drove from St Mary’s in Southampton to the Hollybrook Cemetery in Shirley.

The bikers, some riding Harley Davidson motorbikes and wearing Hell’s Angel’s leathers, were paying their respects to local man James ‘Jimmer’ Smith. Jimmer, the founder member of the Hells Angel’s Motor Club, South Coast England died on April 9.
