No nuclear missile codes for Hampshire MP
11:55am Thursday 19th May 2011 in News By Sam Lister
DAVID Cameron has admitted that he fears Hampshire backbencher Julian Lewis will never be satisfied with the Government over Britain’s nuclear defence – even if he ordered a submarine to be parked in the Solent and handed him the missile codes.
During a jokey exchange at Prime Minister’s Questions, the New Forest East MP called for an alliance of Conservative and Labour MPs who support replacing the Trident deterrent to be formed.
He mischievously added it could be in similar vein to the grouping who opposed the Alternative Vote, the electoral system Lib Dem coalition colleagues desperately wanted but failed to secure.
Dr Lewis said: “I’m grateful to the Prime Minister for repeating our commitment to the future of Trident, its renewal and continuous at sea deterrents remaining in place.
“Would he give his blessing to those honourable members both in the Conservative party and on the Labour benches who think like him that the nuclear deterrent should be above party politics and that we should form an alliance on this issue just as we did on the Alternative Vote so successfully?”
Dr Lewis has been a very vocal advocate of the case for renewing the Trident nuclear deterrent but the issue has created tensions within the coalition as Liberal Democrats are firm opponents.
The Prime Minister said a statement would be made later in the day on the issue.
That was made by Defence Secretary Liam Fox who gave the go-ahead for initial work to begin on its replacement.
But, sparking laughter from MPs, including Dr Lewis, Mr Cameron said: “I do agree that it would be better if we could elevate this issue over party politics and indeed when we voted to go ahead with Trident it was on the basis of a Labour motion that was supported by most Labour MPs and almost all Conservatives MPs.
“I have to say I have a feeling he will never be satisfied even if I placed a Trident submarine in the Solent opposite his constituency and handed him the code – something I’m afraid I’m simply not prepared to do.”
Speaking to the Daily Echo after the exchange Dr Lewis said: “I shall be keeping a keen look out for the appearance of the promised submarine in the Solent though I am quite happy for the Prime Minister to keep the launch codes.”

.
With that in mind why the New Forest MP should bother about getting codes from Cameron when all he needs to do is to pop into a local cheepo push bike shop?
.
Considering the former CND supporter local MP John Denham was also member of the cabinet that committed the government to super expensive Trident programme, Dr. Lewis may have already got a ready made partner. As Denham has shifted very much to the right (In fact over Tuition fees even Tory Lewis is on Denham’s left) the Tories will also have no problem with him on many other anti working class and pro rich policies.

By the way it may interest you that it is the same man who in late 70s early 80s authored a well researched booklet exposing the dangers of nuclear weapons. Typically dishonest as ever the local Labour Party those days released that under the name of certain John Denham, to promote John’s anti nuclear image, as those days it was a trendy thing to do.

Problem lies in the attitude of our three main thatcherite political parties (Tories, LibDems and NuLabour) none of which has commitment to any serious ideology bar thatcherite mercenary dogma; these parties have been taken over by opportunist career politicians like John Denham, who will say whatever to get what they want for themselves rather than considering the real needs of the people
.
The above posts are only minor examples of the dodgy practices of people like Denham use for promoting their own careers. They ride on the back of whatever happens to be politically popular at any given time, make sound bites in favour of the popular subjects without much or any commitment to it. That is why John used somebody’s hard work to be put our under his name, and later on felt comfortable as member of the government which committed UK to wasting resources on super expensive Trident programme, while pleading poverty when it came to essential services for ordinary people.

.
In my view nice sounding seductive word ‘foreign aid’ is frequently abused because it is often used as slush fund for promoting either interests of the various businesses like arms exporters or part of foreign office policy
.
The deeper one looks into this shameful scandal more confusing/murky it gets.
India is good example; it has world’s second fastest growing economy, is not only one of the nuclear powers but also can afford its own independent space programme. On top of all that India also is giving foreign aid to other countries
.
You are wrong to suggest that India gets any assistance or aid from us for its nuclear weapons, but amazingly part of the last corruption infested Commonwealth Games in Delhi was to give aid for promotion of sports to countries which included us the United Kingdom along with Australia and Canada and few other so called advanced and rich nations
.
Pakistan admittedly is the worse example and a very good reason for reviewing the foreign aid policy. Please do not rely on my figures as I am just quoting out of this old man’s worn out memory, which may not be very sharp. But I think you will find that Pakistan is blowing virtually 50% of its income on weapons and army which includes its intelligence service the ISI, which specialises in financing training and deploying terrorism under the name of a religion and was used by both UK and USA in 1980’s for de facto terrorism in same Afghanistan; where our brave men and women are now paying the price for those follies with their lives
.
I have been told by many African friends how our so called foreign aid rather than helping their nations is in fact harming those by keeping corrupt tyrants in power. They use our so called foreign aid to keep the taxes low for their own popularity and even siphon large parts of it into their own bank accounts back in Europe
.
I believe that so called foreign aid of our government in fact brings the whole name of this thing into disrepute. Because most British people are compassionate and genuinely like helping those who are in desperate need. They always donate whatever they can to the non governmental charitable organisations, which are million times better in helping the real needy people than frequently questionable exercises implemented by the government
.
Finally about India. On 16 May a close friend of former Labour MP Bryan Gould and mine who is economist, former diplomat and ex Cabinet minister of India delivered a lecture at Oxford University’s business school. Getting hold of the copy Mani Shankar Aiyar’s paper may explain what India needs; he did not make any demand for foreign aid but argued for going back to the Nehruvian socialism and Gandhian values as prescriptions for India. I believe we even in the UK can learn a lot from that school of thought. Because policies of our successive governments are also increasing number of poor same way the so called economic miracle is doing in India, where millionaires are becoming multi billionaires and poor have started to lose even the trees to take shelters from mid day sun, which only mad dogs or English men like your goodself tend to like!!!

Why while cutting services for the people in this country under the excuse of financial crisis your darling dodgy Dave Cameron has given another £650 millions to same Pakistan?

Why the hell are our scarce resources being wasted for basically providing unofficial air force to one side of Libyan civil war?

Typically dishonest as ever the local Labour Party those days released that under the name of certain John Denham, to promote John’s anti nuclear image, as those days it was a trendy thing to do.
Hilter would be prowd to see this happening its what he wanted and what we had a world war about, Extreme Capitalism the Corporate state where the welthy get all the benefits of the world and the poor are just slaves to the Corporate.
And aid is just part of it, its to keep countrys going in the same direction more and more to the right wing politics, its to stop countrys turning to Socialism, where the wealth is shared to all and not kept by the 2% of the population. Have you not notice how countrys that do turn to Socialism do not get any aid.
What original thought that has not been thought of before, and if you can not see that then you are more blinkered than me and most others.
And bring up Hitler I was pointing to you the direction that we and the world is being push into, We are heading for WW3.

It be like if you stick a bunch of company of board room members on a desert island, and a bunch of working class on another desert island, and come back on them in 100 years time to check up on them to see which survive, it be the working class that would more likely to still be there.
But with a nuclear war, you would wipe out the very ones that would know and have the know how how to survive. no winners.
