A PUBLIC exhibition of final designs for a landmark £2m Spitfire tribute monument on Southampton’s waterfront opens in the city today.
The showcase of the 40m high monument to RJ Mitchell’s iconic fighter, set to become Southampton’s answer to the Statue of Liberty, will run for two weeks at the Solent Sky Museum.
A giant curved steel mast will raise a 1.5 times scale replica Spitfire into the air from a circular viewing platform inspired by the Royal Air Force roundel, with a pool of remembrance in its centre.
The free exhibition marks the submission of a planning application to the council to build the monument beside the historic Trafalgar dry dock.
Plans for the Spitfire tribute were unveiled three years ago after a long-running campaign by the Daily Echo to finally honour the men and women who built and flew the Second World War fighter plane. A fundraising drive is now underway.
As previously reported, the exhibition at the Solent Sky Museum in Albert Road South is open daily 10am-5pm, except Sundays when it will be open noon- 5pm. It will be closed on Mondays.
