SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has been given the go-ahead for a major revamp of its Millbrook superstore in Southampton, bringing 50 new jobs.

The retail giant will increase the retail floor space at the ageing store from 32,941 sq ft to 54,791 sq ft to transform it into an ultra-modern Tesco Extra hypermarket.

The new-look store in Tebourba Way will offer a wider range of food, clothing and other product lines together with a new opticians and improved cafe on a mezzanine floor. The development would increase the number of full-time jobs from 391 to 441.

Councillors gave planning approval despite an objection from a nearby couple who said their home would be bathed in light from the extended store.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We’re extremely pleased that the council recognised the benefits this investment will bring to the local area.

“The extension will allow us to improve the existing store and provide an extended shopping offer for our customers.”
