A MAN has been jailed for trying to rape a teenager, a court heard.

David Sutherland, 19, of Trinity Street, Fareham, approached the 19-year-old woman in a car park in Civic Centre Way, near the offices of Fareham Borough Council.

He offered her money before attacking her, pinning her to the ground and trying to strangle her. He let her go when two passers by interrupted the assault.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard that five days before the attack, Sutherland had been released from serving time for previous offences – including rape. He has now been jailed indefinitely and told he will serve at least seven years.
