A MAN received serious burns in a caravan fire at a Highways Agency motorway depot on Sunday night amid fears of a gas explosion.
The nearby slip road off the M27 junction two at Ower was partially closed for over an hour during the blaze which involved two gas cylinders.
Two of four caravans, owned by a Highways Agency sub contractor, caught fire.
Around 15 firefighters from Redbridge, Totton, Eastleigh and Fordingbridge stations were called to the scene.
A man in his 50s was taken to hospital with burns, firefighters said. It is thought he was hauled to safety from one of the caravans by colleagues before firefighters arrived.
The gas cylinders burned themselves out.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said it could not comment as the cause of the fire was under investigation.
