Powerboat joyrider is jailed

Powerboat joyrider is jailed Powerboat joyrider is jailed

A MAN caused about £15,000 damage after he took a £250,000 powerboat for a joy ride around a Hampshire marina.

Andrew Colman, 21, had argued with his partner and been drinking before he clambered aboard the motor cruiser “G&T”.

Southampton Crown Court heard how he lost control of the boat which “bounced off” the walls of Hythe marina. By the time it came to a stop he had caused more than £12,500 damage to the powerboat and £2,300 worth of damage to a second vessel.

Colman, of Beaulieu Road, Hythe, admitted taking the powerboat with consent and two offences of causing damage. He was jailed for 20 months. The court heard he had applied to Southampton City College to become a chef.

that seems a harsh sentence, when compared to that druggie come thief the other day who escaped gaol and got some community service.

No - the other sentence may be unduly lenient but that is irrelevant. He could easily have killed someone or caused an inferno - many powerboats have large petrol tanks. If he hadn't been lucky enough to crash in the marina where do you think he would have gone and who might he have killed?

how did he get it started?

First offence? He would have been better off if he'd stolen the boat, would have got off with a discharge most likely.

His mistake here was to damage other boats in Hythe marina, which no doubt belonged to influential members of society.
