AN HISTORIC Hampshire church has been left badly water damaged after thieves ripped lead from its roof.

The repair bill is likely to run into thousands of pounds after criminals climbed onto the roof of 400-year-old St Nicolas Church in Stoneham Lane, on the outskirts of Eastleigh, to cut away metal from the eaves.

As well as stripping a 100ft-long section of lead, they smashed several roof tiles.

Heavy rain has then led to further water damage inside the picturesque place of worship.

The North Stoneham and Bassett Parochial Church Council that runs church has revealed it will be looking at alternatives to lead when it replaces the missing metal, in a bid to deter further thefts.

Police are now appealing for help in finding those responsible.

The theft is known to have taken place between 5pm on Sunday, April 29, and 10am on Tuesday, May 1.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious or has information about the crime should call PC David King at Eastleigh Police Station on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
