SECRETS of England's royal past could soon be revealed at Winchester Cathedral as part of a new £10.5m project.

The cathedral is applying for the cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund to launch three exhibitions, including unveiling the bones of Anglo-Saxon and early medieval kings kept in wooden chests at the cathedral for 1,000 years.

It has been granted an initial £475,000 today from the HLF to put together the application over the next two years.

The project, called 'Kings and Scribes - the Birth of a Nation', is focused on increasing visitors to the cathedral and the city while providing an educational experience.

It would also see the 900-year-old Winchester Bible moved to a more prominent position while an architectural exhibit on the second floor would show the evolution of the building from its origins to present day.
