ASDA has scrapped controversial plans to build a multi-storey car park at one of its Hampshire stores.

An application to extend the Totton branch of Asda and provide an extra layer of parking was approved last year – despite strong objections to the proposal.

But the supermarket giant has now submitted proposals for a smaller extension and no major alterations to the car park.

It says: “Car parking management at the store has greatly improved and a recent survey illustrated a reduction in the overall need for long-term parking.

“Asda have re-evaluated the requirement for a raised parking deck, which was the most contentious part of the previous application.”

The original plan to build a 1,358 sq m extension to the store and turn part of the car park into a multi-storey facility was criticised by some town and district councillors – despite the promise of 30 jobs.

Critics claimed more traffic would use Junction Road, which has already been designated an air quality management zone because of high pollution levels.

Councillor David Harrison, who represents Totton South, welcomed the revised scheme, saying air quality was more important than profits.

New Forest District Council will determine the new plan.

A spokesman said: “The proposed extension would be slightly smaller than what’s already been approved. However, the most significant change is the omission of the car deck and a consequent reduction in the number of proposed parking spaces. From a design prospective, the omission would be a positive change.”

He added: “The views of neighbouring properties will need to be carefully considered.”
