IT IS the golden ticket that will pocket Saints £90m, and is expected to provide a boost for businesses around the city and beyond.

But while most Southampton supporters have been cheering their team hitting the Premier League promotion jackpot, one has been counting the personal cost of the club’s success.

Jeweller Kim Rose has had to hand more than £10,000 to customers after offering them their money back on purchases if Saints made it out of the Championship at the first attempt.

A Saints fan himself, the owner of Scarlets Jewellery, in Romsey, first made the bet with Graham Kitcher when he bought a 30th anniversary present for wife Liz, before extending the offer to all customers.

Kim, 54, said: “We didn’t realise just how many people in Romsey would take the offer up – there were loads. I’ve never sold so many diamond rings, so we had to stop it after a while. If we’d carried on doing the promotion we’d have been sitting on a park bench today.”

Saints season ticketholders Graham and Liz, from Romsey, said the deal meant they had been doubly delighted cheering the side on to promotion.

Liz, 51, a human resources adviser, said: “Kim also said if we bought another ring he’d give us the money back if they got promoted, so my daughter Sophie came in and bought her engagement ring on the same deal – he’s given us £1,100 back now.

The jeweller, who ran a similar promotion when Saints made it to the FA Cup final in 2003, is now offering customers their cash back if they can name the winners of the upcoming European Championships.

He said: “I’ve got to do it to try to make my money back. I’ve done it twice and I’ve lost one and won one, so this is best of three.”
