A MOTORIST has died after her car was flipped upside down in a crash on a Hampshire motorway.

The woman was driving a blue Honda Jazz when it collided with a white Volkswagon Golf at 5.25pm this afternoon, between junction 7 and junction 6 of the M3 at Basingstoke.

She suffered life threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead at North Hampshire Hospital, in Basingstoke.

The male driver of the Volkswagon was treated for shock but was not seriously injured.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he is currently in police custody awaiting questioning.

The northbound carriageway between junctions 7 and 6 will be closed until further notice to allow officers to examine the scene and await recovery for the vehicles involved.

A diversion is in place on the A30.

Police are appealing to anyone who saw the collision or either vehicle prior to it to contact Sergeant Nigel Burt at Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Arcadia, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
