A YOUNG woman sparked a chemical emergency tonight involving around 20 firefighters when she fell ill after breathing in the fumes from bathroom cleaners.

The Calmore woman, in her 30s, required oxygen after breathing in toxic fumes from two bottles of detergent she had mixed while cleaning the family bathroom.

Paramedics and fire crews from Totton, Redbridge and St Mary's stations, as well as a special equipment unit, were called out to the “hazardous material” incident just after 6pm.

Firefighters entered the house wearing specialist breathing gear.

Paul Coates from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were quick to identify the risks posed by the chemicals and set up an exclusion zone whilst they ventilated the property.”

He urged home owners to read the instructions on household cleaners.
