A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found at a house this morning.

Police were called to the home in Ryde on the Isle of Wight by a member of the public shortly after 1.30am, where an Island woman in her 50s was found dead.

A 53-year-old man from the Isle of Wight was arrested at 1.50am at the address on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody for questioning.

The address in St. John's Road has been cordoned off for forensic experts to carry out a full examination of the murder scene.

A post-mortem examination on the woman is due to take place this afternoon.

Police have informed her next of kin of the death, but said today her name will not be released until formal identification procedures have been completed.

Detectives from the Hampshire Major Investigation Team (HMIT) are now trying to determining the full circumstances surrounding this death, including discovering exactly how the woman was injured.

A force spokesman said this morning officers are “not in a position to speculate on the cause of death”, which has not yet been confirmed, although they added there is “no information at this time to suggest a wider risk to the community”.

Anyone with information about the death can call CID at Newport police station on 101, quoting Operation Passfield, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
