TRAIN passengers in the south are facing travel chaos today due to a mechanical fault.

Five coaches of the 9.38am from Southampton Parkway to London Waterloo have been abandoned at Basingstoke.

Passengers have reported being herded through carriages on board the South West train service as the train was shortened from 10 carriages to five.

The delays means passengers are expected to arrive 40 minutes late at Waterloo.

In a statement, SWT said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers. "
