DETECTIVES are this afternoon quizzing a man over a terrifying sex attack on a woman in a Southampton park.

Police say they arrested the 25-year-old early this morning on suspicion of the assault which saw the 19-year-old victim rugby tackled to the ground in Palmerston Park.

It is understood the arrest was made following a second sex attack in the Bedford Place area of the city in the early hours of this morning.

As reported by the Daily Echo, in the original incident the victim was making her way home following a night out in the city centre when the ordeal took place, in the early hours of Tuesday.

She was rugby tackled from behind and taken into bushes at the edge of the park where she was sexually assaulted before she pushed him off and ran away.

Police this afternoon confirmed a second attack had taken place today.

A spokesman for Southampton police said the man, from Bitterne, was arrested this morning and is currently in police custody.

Officers are still appealing for anyone with information to contact Southampton police station on 101.
