A SEA of pink descended on Winchester yesterday when the annual Race for Life event returned to the city.

Around 1,600 women and girls dressed to impress in colourful tutus, wigs, legwarmers and cowboy hats, to take part in the 5km event to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

Running, jogging or walking their way around the course, the atmosphere remained electric despite the grey clouds that loomed overhead.

“The crowd is always fantastic at Winchester and they didn't let us down for 2012,” said Cancer Research UK organiser Rachel White.

“I would like to say thank you so much for all the wonderful supporters in the city who take the time to take part or cheer everybody on.”

Held in Winchester for the last ten years, this year's event was held at the Garrison Ground in Bar End Road.

First across the finish line by a clear stretch was 12-year-old Lizzie Payne, from Horton Heath, who also won the event last year.

Completing the course in 21 minutes and four seconds, the Wyvern Community School pupil said: “It's great to win again, I feel really proud.”

Organisers hope to raise around £145,000 for Cancer Research UK from the Winchester event.
