Southampton is one of the worst places in the country for providing essential checks for diabetics, a report reveals.

Health bosses have come under fire after it was found that less than half of diabetics in the city are getting all of the nine recommended checks – the lowest rate among primary care trusts.

The latest figures from the National Diabetes Audit report on Care Processes and Treatment Targets 2010-2011 show that only 42 per cent of people in Southampton are receiving the vital checks which can prevent serious complications such as kidney failure and even amputation.

The checks are recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to be given to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics to pick up problems early and allow swift action.

More than 10,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes in Southampton, with a further 2,700 believed to have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes.
