A TEENAGER who punched a stranger on a Southampton street, breaking his right eye socket, was jailed for 14 months.

Jed Martin had shouted a series of unpleasant remarks at a couple walking home after a party.

They did not respond to the taunting but the 18-year-old crossed the road and stood in front of them.

Then without warning, he punched Rahul Chatterji in the face.

Prosecutor Barnaby Shaw told Southampton Crown Court: “It was a completely unprovoked attack.”

He said that another person was initially arrested but Martin later came forward and admitted to the police he had been responsible.

Martin, of Locke Close, Grateley, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Judge Peter Ralls QC told him: “This was an unpleasant premeditated offence. You were in drink at the time and you seem to have problems with it.”

Mark Sullivan, defending, said Martin was sorry and didn’t think he would injure as badly as he did.
