IT will be a parade of flags for those serving their country in the armed services at sea and in the merchant navy.

The White Ensign of the Royal Navy, the HM Coastguard and Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Blue Ensign, the Merchant Navy’s Red Ensign and the Army Ensign of Her Majesty’s Army vessels will all be carried at the shipping Festival Service at Winchester Cathedral on Thursday.

The annual tribute to seafarers, starting at 7.30pm, is for those who work and have worked in the shipping industry and will be attended by the Lord Lieutenant and the mayors of Winchester and Southampton.

The preacher will be the Venerable Martin Poll, Archdeacon for The Royal Navy while the music will be by the City of Southampton Brass Band. Cadets from the Southampton, Winchester and Romsey units of the Sea Cadets Corps will carry the flags.
